Magistrates Court

Some cases heard in the magistrates’ court may be dismissed as 'petty crime', but an appearance in court is nevertheless traumatic for those involved, and of course for their families.

Our team at Ralli understands that there are wider issues, and we do not subscribe to the view that some allegations are not serious enough to require full and proper attention.

We recognise that not only are people charged with crimes they have not committed, but also the Crown Prosecution Service often overcharges an offence as something more serious than it should be. It is therefore important to us that we challenge and test the evidence. Of course when it is appropriate that a guilty plea is entered, our responsibility is to achieve the best possible sentence for our clients, whether that be the shortest appropriate custodial sentence, a Community Order with Supervision, unpaid work or some other requirement, or a conditional discharge.

Our criminal defence solicitors will provide you with the best advice and representation in respect of offences that can only be tried summarily by magistrates, such as common assault, vehicle interference and low-value criminal damage, to more serious ‘either way’ offences that could also be dealt with at the Crown Court but may stay in the magistrates’ court, such as theft, handling stolen property, taking a vehicle without consent, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, burglary, and possession or supply of drugs. We also provide representation to oppose applications for anti social behaviour orders.

Many motoring offences are also dealt with in the magistrates court, please see our motoring page.

We offer free initial advice over the telephone, by e-mail or in person, as to whether you qualify for public funding for your defence – formerly known as legal aid. Please contact us, either by telephone or by clicking on the ‘Contact Us’ link. Thereafter we will help you apply for a Representation Order, if public funding is available and you are eligible.
